Sodium Bicarbonate

DISCRIPTION

Sodium Bicarbonate has a formula NaHCO3. Molecular weight is 84.

APPLICATION

Sodium Bicarbonate is used primarily to remove calcium from muds with pH above 9.0, especially calcium contamination due to cement.

Ca(OH)2 + NaHCO3 -> CaCO3 + H2O + NaOH

Calcium contamination from anhydrate, CaSO4 should be removed with Soda Ash if a simultaneous reduction in pH is not desirable.

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT

Pretreatment of cement contamination should be not more than 1.4 – 2.1 kg/m3 (0.5 – 0.75 lb/bbl) of Sodium Bicarbonate. Over-treatment can be as detrimental to fluids properties as cement contamination. It is therefore advisable to treat only soluble calcium ion on a circulation basis and treat lime particles (cement) that subsequently go into solution. Approximately 0.42 kg/m3 (0.147 lb/bbl) NaHCO3 will remove 100 mg/l calcium originating from lime.
